Anastasia Elias, Ph.D.

Dr. Elias completed her Ph.D. at the University of Alberta.  Research in the Elias group is focused on the development of ‘smart’ materials – materials that respond to external stimuli such as light, heat or magnetic fields – and biocompatible materials for biomedical applications such as implantable neuroprosthetics.   Currently, Dr. Elias’ group is working with other members of the Electrode Focus Group to develop biocompatible electrodes for spinal implantation, materials and polymer coatings to improve biocompatibility of spinal implants, a surrogate spinal cord to mimic the mechanical interfacial properties of real spinal cords in order to conduct meaningful in vitro studies of the mechanical stability of intraspinal implants.
